Cellist Benjamin Noyes performs as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral musician throughout New England. In 1994 he was selected by Yo-Yo Ma to participate as a soloist and recitalist on a concert tour of China, performing with the Beijing, Chengdu, Shenzhen, and Shanghai Symphony Orchestras.
As a youth, Noyes received top prizes in the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts ARTS Recognition and Talent Search, the National Federation of Music Clubs competitions, and the American String Teachers Association National Solo Competition. His festival appearances include the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, New York String Orchestra Seminar, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Sarasota Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival and School, and Meadowmount School of Music.
He studied at the Eastman School of Music before earning degrees from the Rice University Shepherd School of Music and the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music, where he performed with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago under conductors including Pierre Boulez, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Daniel Barenboim.
Noyes performs regularly with the Portland Symphony Orchestra and has appeared with Opera Maine’s Studio Artist Program. His chamber collaborations include the Portland String Quartet, Zograf String Quartet, Palaver Strings, and the Amethyst Chamber Ensemble, and he works with composers including Dan Sonenberg.
Alongside traditional repertoire, Noyes explores the intersection of acoustic cello and electronic sound. His composition Elysian Fields: Concerto for Cello and Electronics in 528 Hz Major is available on major streaming platforms. Noyes is equally at home performing standard repertoire, contemporary works, and collaborative projects, making him a versatile artist for orchestras, chamber ensembles, and new music programs.
